Use Your Skills for Good

Bristol-Myers Squibb's Skills 2 Give program is an easy way for you to use your professionals skills to help strengthen nonprofit organizations.

Your skills are valuable. Unfortunately, many nonprofits can't pay for professional services such as copywriting, strategic planning, or research. This type of work is essential to building operational effectiveness, but it is often left on the to-do list while the nonprofit focuses on its critical mission work.

You can make a big difference to these passionate organizations by working remotely on projects or even just getting on a phone call to provide advice. And you can do it according to your schedule.

When you volunteer through Skills 2 Give you are giving so much more than your time. You are supporting organizational growth, which enables nonprofits to have an even greater social good impact.

What Other Volunteers are Saying

“I volunteered to help translate the Jobs for New Jersey's Graduates brochure into Spanish. Had the pleasure of meeting virtually with Donna Custard, President of NJ Chamber of Commerce Foundation. I was incredible to learn about the work they do and it was very humbling to be able to collaborate with them.”
Sebastian Garrido Lecca Access Medical Information Specialist at Bristol-Myers Squibb
“I really enjoyed the call very much. I was impressed by Stephna and what she has already been able to achieve on her own. I felt that the cause was so engaging that creative ideas came smoothly and easily, and it was very rewarding to hear from Stephna that she felt thrilled about some of the suggestions I made. she asked to stay in touch to follow up on the execution, which I'd be so happy to help with. great experience, definitively will do it again!”
Severine Lacourt Worldwide Commercial Lead at Bristol-Myers Squibb

Skills 2 Give is a skills based volunteering program where employees have an opportunity to donate their professional skills through virtual projects that provide critical, capacity-building support for nonprofit organizations. These meaningful volunteer projects enable employees to use their skills in a different and sometimes more challenging environment, while delivering valuable support to a nonprofit in need.

The program is open to US active, full time and part time employees (28 or more hours a week), whose employment is not covered by a collective bargaining agreement. Contingent workers, temporary employees, and interns are not eligible.

Employees may volunteer up to 20 hours per year of volunteer time during working hours. You should have a conversation with your manager for approval (written approval required, email is acceptable) to proceed and parameters around your volunteer activities. Employees may volunteer additional hours beyond the 20 per year but would be doing so on their own time.

Manager approval is a requirement for program participation. It is recommended that managers and employees have a dialogue to participate in a Skills 2 Give volunteering project. All employees must track their volunteer hours in the time keeping system they use (i.e. Kronos for hourly employees or Workday for non-exempt salary and exempt salary employees) to provide for effective management of the program and ensure that their total BMS paid volunteer time does not exceed the annual limit of 20 hours.

Visit skills2give.bms.com to complete your volunteer profile. Once you have created a profile and registered to the site, you can search for available projects or 1-hour phone consultations by filtering on your skills and causes of interest. Recommendations will also be sent to you via email. If you match with a project, there will be a mutual interview between you and the non-profit to ensure the right fit.

If you need help deciding if a project is right for you, feel free to email Catchafire at [email protected].

Each project varies in size, but the average project represents a 1- 40 hour commitment over the course of two to three months. Nonprofits develop their project requirements through the predesigned project templates. Project examples include but are not limited to creating a marketing strategy, writing an annual report or designing a talent recruitment strategy. Employees may volunteer additional hours beyond the 20 per year but would be doing so on their own time.

Employees can volunteer just one hour by sharing their expertise with a nonprofit that has posted a question or challenge on the BMS Skills 2 Give volunteer platform.

If there are volunteer opportunities available in your region, you'll have the option to filter by location. However, since all Catchafire engagements are meant to be completed virtually, we encourage you to focus on finding projects that best fit your skills & interests, regardless of location.

Each project varies in size, but the average project represents a 1- 40 hour commitment over the course of two to three months. Volunteers have an opportunity to work with the nonprofit to develop an agreed-upon implementation schedule and deadlines. During the interview and planning stage, it is important to be realistic about the time available to dedicate to this work.

Yes, with Manager approval (email is an acceptable form of written approval) and if you are confident of managing several work plans and deadlines, but it is recommended that employees start out by doing one project for their first experience.

Yes, just decide who you would like to work with at BMS, and once you have their commitment, determine which one of you will act as the project lead – that is the person that will go through the application process on the Skills 2 Give volunteer platform. Please include the member(s) of your team in your application to the nonprofit’s project, and ensure that all members of your team will be able to attend any interview that may occur once you have submitted your application.

The nonprofit will review your application to decide whether they want to move forward with an interview. If so, you will be contacted by Catchafire to schedule the call. Nonprofits are encouraged to decide promptly, but there is no set timeline for when they will reply.

After the interview, you can log into your account dashboard and ACCEPT or PASS on the match. Once both parties accept, you are officially matched and can begin the project. If you need to exchange any materials or have follow-up conversations to determine if it is a good fit after the interview, you are encouraged to do so.

Once you are matched with the organization on a project, we suggest to align with the nonprofit contact to decide on what tools you would like to use to work together! See this Collaboration document to see what tools are available on the BMS network.

Yes, employees may nominate grantees with which they have strong relationship to be included in the Skills 2 Give volunteer program. All nonprofits should align with the definition of eligibility of the Employee Giving Program. Once an organization has been nominated, the program administrator, Catchafire, will vet the nonprofit for inclusion.

Catchafire is committed to making sure everyone who wants to volunteer their skills can do so. If you are having trouble finding a project that fits, feel free to contact Catchafire at [email protected] for help.
